Today, I decided to some free time researching innovative and inexpensive ways everyday people can take action to make their communities greener places. I was excited to discover the term “guerilla gardening,” which refers to planting ecologically supportive seeds on unused public land to make neglected areas more beautiful and to nourish dwindling populations of pollinators. There can be disputes over the legality of this practice, but it is generally viewed in a positive light as a method of community service. As spring approaches and the weather gets warmer, I plan to drop some wildflower seeds, which I ordered specifically for my zip code, around my home and in a few other empty public spaces. I would love this year as well to experiment with making my own seed balls to grow milkweed plants to provide much-needed food for the rapidly declining Monarch butterfly population. Check back for updates!
